Luu Makes History as Track & Field Competes at SoCal Regional
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Allan Hancock College track & field programs continued the postseason campaign at the Southern California Regional Prelims and Finals, hosted by Bakersfield College. | FULL RESULTS
Eva Luu made history at the event after claiming the title in the 3,000-meter steeplechase race with a final time of 11:56.07. She becomes the first member of the Bulldogs track and field program to win a SoCal Regional event in 22 years. The last time any AHC athlete left the regional event with a championship was in 2004 when Bobbie Patton clinched the shot put, and Latiffa Taylor claimed the 100-meter hurdles and the long jump.
Luu also finished fifth in the 10,000-meter race (40:22.20). Abigail Aponte posted the second-best heave in program history after a 44.52-meter mark in the hammer throw, placing her third at the event. Both athletes have qualified for the state championship in the three events.
Mychael Walker and John Gutierrez have also qualified for the state meet. Walker advanced after a third place performance in the triple jump (14.83m) while Gutierrez earned his way with a seventh place finish in the 5,000-meter race (15:20.73).
Other medalists at the regional meet include: Esequiel Gauna (Javelin - 8th); Jacob Garbiso (Shot Put - 7th); Semaj Carmichael, Luis Magana, Tyson Scott, Jaden Styles (4x100m Relay - 7th).
The 3C2A State Championship is set to take place at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut on May 15-16.
